Colonials Swimming And Diving Wins 17 Events Against UMass

WASHINGTON, DC - The Colonials hosted a larger Massachusetts squad and won more than half of the events today at the Smith Center. The women (4-4) won, 145.5-132.5, featuring standout performances from freshman Maggie Moss (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) who won three events and Ruth Dubyel (West Point, NY/James I. O'Neill) and Christina Boland (Purcelville, VA/Loudon Valley) who each won two. The men (0-9) won seven of the 12 events that they entered in but fell to a sizeable UMass side who defeated them, 161-96. Freshman Sean Kernan (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) won two events and anchored the 400-yd free relay team who won in a time of 3:23.20. Junior Josh Roberts (Memphis, TN/White Station) also won two events on the day.
Moss who has already won Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors twice, won an incredible three races including: 100-yd backstroke in 0:58.21, 200-yd individual medley in 2:10.84, and 200-yd backstroke in 2:06.00. Boland won the 50-yd freestyle in 0:25.37 and the 100-yd freestyle in 0:54.42. Dubyel won the 100-yd butterfly in 0:58.15 as well as the 200-yd butterfly in 2:09.05. The other Colonials winners on the women's side were Junior Kristen Fagley (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/Westminster), sophomore Kristen Rasmuson (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel), and freshman Suzanna Zifkin (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township).
Kernan had a strong performance for the Colonials on the men's side with two wins including the 50-yd freestyle in 0:22.15 and the 100-yd freestyle in 0:48.62. Roberts who also had two victories won the 100-yd breastroke in 1:00.65 and the 200-yd breastroke in 2:13.64. Other winners on the men side were senior Andrew De Sorbo (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury) and sophomore Bryan Ferretti (Newtown, PA/Council Rock).
GW's women's team will compete again on Wednesday, January 29 at 4:00 pm against Richmond at the Smith Center. Both the men and the women will take to the pool for their final regular season meet on Saturday, February 1 against George Mason at 10:30. The diving competition will for this event will be held at George Mason, while swimming will be at GW's Smith Center.
