PHILADELPHIA, PA - The GW men's and women's crews traveled to Philadelphia, Oct. 26 for the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta. The weather was nearly ideal for racing, except for a strong head wind in the first 1,000 meters of the course, cool temperatures and no rain. The Men's team sent first and second Varsity Eights to compete in the Championship 8 event, and the women sent a four for the Championship 4 event.
Men's results:
Men's Championship Eight (out of 22 crews):
1.Sydney University 12:37
2.U.S. Naval Academy 12:41
3.Pennsylvania 12:48
4.Temple 12:55
5.George Washington 13:07 (1st Varsity)
18. George Washington 13:59 (2nd Varsity)
19. Georgetown 14:08
This result was the best by the GW men's program in recent history. GW men's coach Matt Boyle commented on his programs success, "For our first boat to finish in the top five and for our second boat to defeat Georgetown's second boat was a great sign for what the men are capable of this Spring. Our team is moving in the right direction and if we continue to improve our work ethic I believe we can accomplish many of our goals."
Women's Championship Four (out of 25 crews):
1. New York Athletic Club 17:22
2. George Washington 17:26
3. Hobart and William Smith 17:31
4. Villanova 17:32
5. U.S. Naval Academy 17:38
The Women's Varsity team sent their top four to race in the Varsity 4 category and finished as the top college crew, and second overall out of 25 crews entered. Only a club crew from the New York Athletic Club was able to beat the Colonials over the three-mile course. GW women's head coach Steve Peterson was impressed with the boat speed displayed by his top four rowers. "This result proves that we are capable of racing with and beating the top collegiate crews on the east coast. Anytime you can perform the way our crew did, it really proves that we are doing the right work."
The Colonials then travelled to Princeton, NJ, Sunday to race at the Princeton Chase.
Next up for the Colonial Crews will be this Saturday as the team travels to Philadelphia for the the Head of the Schuylkill regatta, and then they travel to Princeton, NJ, for the Princeton Chase on Sunday.
