PRINCETON, NJ - The GW men's and women's crews traveled to Princeton, NJ, Sunday to compete in the Princeton Chase regatta. The conditions were ideal for racing, as temperatures were a cool 60 degrees and only a slight headwind made for slower than normal times. The water was flat throughout three-mile course which started in nearby Kingston, NJ, and finished at the Princeton University boathouse.
The GW crews would be racing four crews in three events; the Men's Open Four, the Women's Open Four and two crews in the Women's Open Eight.
Starting off the day was the men's open four, consisting of John D'Alba, Vic Marwin, Alex Cashman, Joe Richard and coxswain Evan Johnson. The GW men would finish the race in a very strong 10th place out of 25 crews. First year varsity men's coach Matt Boyle was very optimistic about his crews' performance. "Our four was very competitive with the top programs in the country, and the crew feels they still have a lot of room to continue to improve."
For the women, the eight was the first race of the day. For the varsity it would be one of the best rows a GW varsity women's eight would have at the Princeton Chase. The crew stroked by senior captain Tracy Kusnir, would finish 14th overall out of the 33 crews. That finish continued a string of races which have marked consistant improvement for the Colonials. Their result placed them ahead of crews from Columbia, Navy, Rutgers, and Villanova, and had them closing in on the crews from Penn, Boston University, and Cornell.
The women's four of Molly Hueller, Brynn Kowlaski, Kristen Slaman, Regina Cambilargiu and coxswain Liz Bissinger, put the final stamp on a successful weekend by finishing ninth overall in a competitive field of 46 crews. This was the same four which finished second the day before in Philadelphia. Their ninth-place finish put them in fifth place among all colleges overall in the event, finishing behind Princeton, Yale, Radcliffe and Virginia. The Colonials' time put them within 25 seconds of the leader, and far in front of crews from Cornell, Penn, Boston University, and Georgetown to name a few.
Women's Varsity Coach Steve Peterson remarked on the success of the crews "this was a long but unbelievably successful weekend for both the men's and women's crews," Peterson said. "For our athletes to step up and perform this well on Sunday, after a long day of racing yesterday in Philadelphia was fantastic. I think it shows that the athletes, and staff have the program moving in the right direction. I for one am very excited about the upcoming spring season, and can't wait until we start racing in March. I think a lot of people will surprised to see how far we have come in such a short time."
