Women's Soccer Falls to Hoyas, 2-1
WASHINGTON, DC (September 7, 2001) - Georgetown sophomore Jessie Beers-Altman knocked in a corner kick by freshman Nicole DePalma with just under 17 minutes remaining in the second half to lead the Hoyas to a 2-1 victory over GW this afternoon, Sept. 7, at the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
The Hoyas jumped out to a 1-0 lead with ten minutes gone by in the first half when senior Alyson Smith took a pass from sophomore Courtney Shaub and beat GW sophomore keeper Christine O'Malley (Davis, CA/Davis Senior) to the top right corner of the net.
The score remained that way until early in the second half when GW redshirt sophomore Kim Warner (North York, Ontario/St. Joseph's) struck again. After scoring two goals on Tuesday against Howard, Warner took a nice cross from sophomore Sarah Minnich (Wilton, CT/Wilton (St. John's University) and split two defenders at the top of the box. Warner came in on a short breakaway and beat Georgetown goaltender Shereena Chang to the bottom right corner of the net to notch her third goal of the season and tie the score at 1.
It remained tied at 1 until the 74th minute when the Hoyas scored what would prove to be the gamewinner. DePalma served a corner kick into the box that got through a maze of players and found its way to Beers-Altman, who converted the chance at the 73:32 mark.
GW now heads to New York for its first road trip of the season. The Colonials face Wagner College on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 1:30 p.m. The Colonials then participate in the Naval Academy Tournament in Annapolis, MD beginning next Friday, Sept. 14, when they face the Butler Bulldogs beginning at 4:00 p.m.
