In their second season as a varsity sport, the Colonials (14-10, 6-2) have exceeded expectations, receiving an at-large bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships and qualifying for both the Southern and Eastern Championships.
GW went 2-0 on Friday, topping Gannon 17-9 and Washington & Jefferson 16-5. Senior Heather Walenga led the Colonials, scoring nine goals over the two matches. GW never trailed in either match, and was slated to face No. 14 University of Michigan on Saturday.
The Colonials held their own with the more experienced Michigan squad, trailing 5-3 at half. The Wolverines buckled down on defense in the remaining two periods, holding GW scoreless and taking the match 11-3. Freshman Mia Fabian led GW scorers with two goals.
GW would face No. 18 Indiana in their final match of the weekend. The Colonials battled the Hoosiers through the first two periods, down by a single goal 4-3. Indiana would outlast the GW charge, and win 11-7.
The Colonials travel to Providence, RI to compete in the Eastern Championships from April 21-22. The top team from the Eastern Championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
