Water Polo Takes Two Of Three At Villanova

WASHINGTON, DC (February 18, 2001) - Women's water polo completed a successful day on Saturday, taking two of three matches at Villanova.
The Colonials (2-2) won their first match of the day, topping host Villanova 13-9. GW was led by senior Andrea Philpot who scored three goals on the match. The Colonials took a 2-1 lead after one quarter of play behind goals by co-captain Heather Walenga and sophomore Kiersten Johnson. The Wildcats tied it up in the second quarter 5-5, but GW would assert itself in the second half, taking a one-goal lead in the third quarter 8-7. The Colonials surged the the final frame, outscoring Villanova 5-2 behind two goals by Philpot.
In the second match of the day, GW ran into a tough Princeton squad that ran away with the contest in the second half. The Colonials kept it close in the first period, down only two goals, 5-3. However, the Tigers would prove to be too much for the young team, and held the Colonials scoreless in the second half to win 16-4.
GW met Bucknell in a re-match of the Colonials' first game of the season when they lost a tough match against the Bison at Smith Center, 8-7. This would prove to be another battle, as both teams did not back down. GW took an early lead, scoring five goals in the first quarter, with Walenga scoring two for the Colonials. The Bison held GW scoreless in the second quarter, and cut the lead to one by half, 5-4.
It began to look like a repeat of the GW's season opener, as Bucknell took the lead after three, 8-7. The Colonials would buckle down in the final quarter, holding the Bison to one goal while retaking the lead, and escaping with a one-goal win, 10-9.
The Colonials will travel to Providence, RI to compete in the Brown Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, February 24-25.
