Dayton Controls Women's Soccer, 3-0
WASHINGTON, DC (Oct. 7, 2001) - The University of Dayton used three first half goals to take control early and defeat GW, 3-0, this afternoon, October 7, at the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. The loss drops the Colonials' record to 3-6 overall and 0-3 in the Atlantic 10.
The Flyers got on the board at the 21:15 mark as junior Shannon Kuhl took a pass in the box from sophomore Beth McHugh and notched her sixth goal of the year to give Dayton a 1-0 lead.
The score looked like it would remain that way going into halftime, but the Flyers used a late first half burst to put the game away. Freshman Tesia Kozlowski extended the lead to 2-0 at the 39:51 mark when she beat GW keeper Christine O'Malley (Davis, CA/Davis) to the top right corner of the net with a beautiful shot from the top left of the box. Two minutes later fellow freshman Jessica Melvin took a pass from senior Megan McKnight and beat O'Malley to make it 3-0.
GW tried to rally in the second half, but was not able to solve the Flyers defense as they were shut out for the third time this season.
The Colonials were led by freshman Lindsay Bruno (Kensington, CT/Loomis Chaffee School), sophomore Molly Sunderdick (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) and redshirt sophomore Kim Warner (North York, Ontario, Canada/St. Joseph's), all of whom had two shots apiece.
The Colonials have off until Friday, Oct. 12, when they face conference foe Temple beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
