The George Washington University Department of Athletics named Matt Klampert as head coach to lead its softball program in August of 2025. A coach with extensive experience at the collegiate level and deep ties in the Atlantic 10 Conference, Klampert arrives at GW from Saint Joseph's, where he was the top assistant last season in the Hawks' first 30-win season since 2013.
In 2024 in Philadelphia, Klampert was part of a team that advanced to the third day of the A-10 Championship, before falling to eventual champion Saint Louis. In the process, Klampert and the Hawks knocked out GW for their 30th win of the season, only the 12th time in program history with as many wins. Along the way, St. Joe's had the A-10 Rookie of the Year for just the third time in program history and had multiple All-Atlantic 10 First Team members for the first time since 2021.
Prior to his time on Hawk Hill, Coach Klampert spent the previous season as an assistant coach at nearby Penn where he facilitated in the development of two players who earned All-Ivy League honors. He's also served a stint at another A-10 school in Fordham, where he helped the Rams to a pair of A-10 titles. A champion at nearly every stop, from 2016-18, Klampert was part of the staff at Iona, when the Gaels won the 2017 MAAC regular-season title and earned a bid to the National Invitational Softball Championship.Â
A 2014 graduate of St. John’s with a bachelor’s degree in sport management with a minor in business administration, Klampert served as a student manager with the Red Storm as an undergrad, and moved into a volunteer assistant coach role with the team for the 2014-15 season and helped St. John’s capture the Big East championship.
