Matt Colpoys joined the GW men’s basketball staff as the Director of Recruiting in September 2022 and was elevated into an Assistant Coach role for the 2023-24 season, where he has served as the team’s co-offensive coordinator.
Colpoys has been instrumental in the team’s offensive success since his arrival. GW has posted an adjusted offensive efficiency greater than 1.07 points per possession each of his three years after having not done so since 2016-17.
GW averaged 76.8 ppg in 2023-24, the program’s second straight year averaging more than 76 points per game. The Revolutionaries also broke the all-time program record with 287 made 3-pointers with Colpoys’ guidance.
In 2023-24, Colpoys helped guide a GW offense that ranked second in the A-10 in scoring and third in the league in 3-point percentage. James Bishop IV made 71 3-pointers during the campaign, marking the second straight year a GW Rev had knocked down at least 70 3s under Colpoys’ watch (Brendan Adams, 74, 2022-23).
While serving as the Director of Recruiting, Colpoys was instrumental in landing future A-10 All-Rookie contributor Darren Buchanan Jr. as well as Jacoi Hutchinson, who came to GW as the school’s highest-rated high school recruit since 2000 per 247Sports.
Colpoys came to GW after serving as a graduate assistant at Iowa State following two years as an assistant coach at Johns Hopkins.
Colpoys helped oversee the best two-year record in program history during his tenure at Johns Hopkins, aiding the Blue Jays to a 47-8 mark in 2019-20 and 2021-22 (2020-21 not played due to COVID-19). Hopkins won a pair of Centennial Conference championships during Colpoys’ tenure and advanced to two Division III NCAA Tournaments.
Among his chief duties were player development, scouting, recruiting and analytics. Within the recruiting realm, he was involved in all aspects of evaluating and recruiting potential student-athletes. Namely, he organized the recruiting database, evaluated players, communicated with recruits and organized on-campus visits.
Colpoys is a 2018 Penn State Behrend graduate with a finance degree. He led the Lions to a 42-14 record as a two-year starter before an injury late in his sophomore campaign ended his playing career. He averaged 7.1 points, 2.6 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game in his first two years. Colpoys then joined the PSB coaching staff as a student assistant for two years. The Lions went 44-13 with an AMCC Tournament Championship and NCAA First Round appearance during his tenure on the bench.
Colpoys was a volunteer assistant for the Erie Bayhawks of the NBA G League in the spring of 2019. He was also a camp counselor at basketball camps at Penn State Behrend, Michigan, Notre Dame and LeMoyne for three summers.
