John Hampton
- Title:
- Assistant Coach
- Email:
Joining GW after a three-year stint at Rutgers, Hampton brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Buff & Blue. While with the Scarlet Knights, Hampton worked directly with Rutgers' wings and centers, while also serving as the team’s defensive specialist. Under his tutelage, Rutgers saw one player reach the 1,000-career-point threshold, helping her to the 28th-most points in program history. During his first season in 2022-23, Hampton, along with Head Coach Coquese Washington, laid the foundation for a strong team culture both on and off the court. He helped guide the program to its 1,000th win all-time, becoming just the 22nd Division I team and the third Big Ten team to reach that mark.
Â
No stranger to the A-10, Hampton spent seven seasons with Saint Joseph’s from 2015-21. After starting as an assistant, Hampton was elevated to the program’s Assistant Head Coach in 2018, working directly under longtime Head Coach Cindy Griffin. During his time on Hawk Hill, Hampton led St. Joe’s to two postseason berths, the 2018 Atlantic 10 title game and a WNIT victory over the Big East’s Seton Hall. His guidance helped four Hawks earn All-Conference awards over his tenure.
Â
Hampton’s résumé also includes head coach experience, serving in that role with Clarkson University from 2010-14. His 2013-14 team finished with the most wins the program had seen in over a decade, and he also coached six players to all-conference awards, headlined by the 2012-13 Liberty Rookie of the Year. His players also achieved success in the classroom, with 10 earning All-Liberty Academic Team honors.
Â
As a player, Hampton was a walk-on at Mansfield University before breaking out and earning the team’s MVP award in 2007 and 2008. He was also honored at the conference level, earning a selection to the PSAC All-Conference team as a senior.
Â
Hampton earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Mansfield in 2008. He also graduated with his Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership from SUNY-Potsdam in 2010.
