James Hellekjaer joined GW in January of 2019. He currently oversees the Educational Support Services department and is responsible for academic support for baseball and gymnastics. James was promoted to the role of Assistant Athletic Director for Educational Support Services in August of 2022, as he was previously serving as an Academic Advisor.
Hellekjaer came to GW in 2019 from the University of Maryland, where as an Assistant Athletic Academic Advisor, he worked primarily with six varsity athletics teams. Prior to his time at Maryland, Hellekjaer worked with the women's basketball and football teams while pursuing his Master's degree at Michigan State University. A Washington, D.C./Potomac, Md., native, he grew up in metro Detroit. Hellekjaer earned his bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from Michigan State University. He spent five years on the men's basketball staff at Oakland University (Michigan), followed by two years coaching basketball and teaching at Saginaw Valley State University (Michigan).
