The George Washington University Department of Athletics registered an overall NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 94 percent in the latest report, marking the eighth-straight year that GW has achieved at least a 94 percent, with 11 of the Revolutionaries' 20 programs earning a perfect 100 percent score.
"The sustained academic excellence of our 400-plus GW student-athletes is truly exceptional," said GW Director of Athletics Michael Lipitz. "It's a clear reflection of their commitment and the enthusiasm with which they pursue academic endeavors on a daily basis. We also salute the commitment of our administration, faculty, coaches and academic support team in helping our student-athletes earn their degrees and prepare for their lives after college."
The 11 GW Athletics programs that recorded 100 percent graduation rates last year were men's basketball, men's and women's cross country, golf, gymnastics, women's indoor track & field, women's soccer, men's and women's outdoor track & field, tennis and volleyball.
Seven other GW programs — baseball, women's basketball, lacrosse, rowing, men's soccer, softball and men's swimming & diving — checked in with graduation rates of 90 percent or better.
"Academic success at GW is our highest priority and a source of tremendous pride for the university," said James Hellekjaer, assistant athletics director for educational support services. "GW Revs student-athletes are committed to excellence, and the incredible support they receive in pursuit of their goals from our educational support team, coaches and staff should be lauded."
The latest NCAA GSR announcement comes on the heels of another impressive academic year for GW Athletics in 2023-24. Paced by tennis' 3.88 cume GPA in the spring semester, GW Athletics enjoyed another stellar year in the classroom, punctuated with the announcement that 273 student-athletes were named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll. The mark is just one off the university's all-time record of 274 that was established during the 2020-21 academic year when most classes were held virtually during the pandemic. More than half of GW's student-athletes achieved a GPA greater than 3.5 in the spring semester, while 42 earned a perfect 4.0.
What is the Graduation Success Rate (GSR)?
The NCAA developed the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in 2002 to more fully reflect the academic achievement of student-athletes.
The traditional Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) compiled by the U.S. Department of Education is used as an indicator of academic success for all college students. For student-athletes, it measures the cohort of first-time, full-time freshman on athletics aid who enter in the fall semester and graduate within six years of entering their original four-year institution.
Calculation of the GSR begins with the cohort the federal methodology identifies, but additionally includes student-athletes the federal rate omits — (1) incoming transfer student-athletes who receive athletics aid, and (2) freshmen on athletics aid who enroll at midyear rather than in fall. The GSR also does not penalize colleges whose student-athletes transfer in good academic standing, as those student-athletes are effectively moved into the cohort of the destination colleges.
GW fans can get in the game by directly supporting student-athletes through donations to the Buff & Blue Fund. For more information on GW Athletics, fans are encouraged to visit GWsports.com, or follow the Revolutionaries on social media through X (@GWsports) and Instagram (@gwsports).
