BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - The George Washington University water polo team has picked up its first national ranking of the season, slotting in at No. 20 in the most recent CWPA national rankings. Graduate goalkeeper Luca Castorina has played a crucial role in GW's rise, and been chosen as the MAWPC's Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
Castorina led the charge in net once again as the Revolutionaries completed a 3-0 weekend in conference play and extended its win-streak to seven. The Catania, Sicily native is up to 200 saves, 15 assists and 15 steals on the season, and kept all three opponents below 12 goals this past weekend.
Castorina's excellence was particularly on display against Navy on Friday night. The Revolutionaries were down, 12-9, entering the final frame, but Castorina held the Mids scoreless in the final eight minutes, making important saves down the stretch to boost GW to its 13-12 win.
Over the three-game stretch, Castorina made 38 saves and added four assists and two steals to keep GW's momentum rolling.
The Revolutionaries are back for two matches this weekend at The St. James (Springfield, Va.). First, GW faces a tall-test in the form of No. 2 (T) Fordham (12:00 p.m.). Then, the Revolutionaries celebrate graduating seniors before facing off against Wagner (6:00 p.m.).
