WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball newcomers Benny Schröder and Zamoku Weluche-Ume will compete for their respective national teams in the FIBA U20 European Championships, beginning this week.
Schröder will be competing for Germany in the A Division of the Championship, which begins on Saturday, July 8 in Heraklion, Crete. Germany will compete in round robin play vs. France, Iceland and Slovenia over three days before the tournament advances to a single elimination bracket beginning next Wednesday, July 12.
Schröder has had a decorated career for his national team, leading the German U16 and U18 national teams in scoring at their respective European Championships. In 2021, he averaged 16.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg and 2.4 apg in 23.4 mpg for the U18 squad and was named the 2021 FIBA U18 European Challenger Outstanding Player.
Weluche-Ume will compete for Great Britain in the B Division of the Championship, which tips off on Friday, July 7 in Skopje, North Macedonia. Great Britain will take part in four pool play games over five days vs. Austria, Portugal, Luxembourg and Hungary with the results determining the classification for the next stage. The top two teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals, while the third- and fourth-place teams will play in a consolation bracket and fifth-place teams play an additional round robin.
Similar to Schröder, Weluche-Ume has previously competed for his country's U16 and U18 national teams on the international stage.
All games for both divisions will be streamed on FIBA's YouTube channel.
