Focus turns to A-10 Championships
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Matthew Whelan recorded his second GW top-ten swim of the weekend as GW swimming and diving put a bow on the Cavalier Invite, concluding the regular season. The Buff and Blue pulled out of the final day of competition and its attention now shifts to the A-10 Championships, which runs from February 15-18, at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
In total, GW sent out eight swimmers on day two. The highest finish of the day belonged to Whelan with a historic second-place (47.60) finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Whelan jumped into fourth all-time on GW's top-ten 100-yard butterfly list, a day after moving into third on the 200-yard butterfly top-ten list.
Stine Omdahl Petersen had the high finish of the day for the GW women, finishing fourth (1:04.23) in the 100-yard breaststroke. Petersen already owns GW's fastest (1:01.74) 100-yard breaststroke time.
Moriah Freitas took sixth place (54.83) in the 100-yard butterfly, improving on her personal-best time by .06 seconds. Freitas remains fourth all-time on GW's 100-yard butterfly list.
"I'm really happy with our performances this weekend at UVA," Head Coach Brian Thomas said in a post-meet statement, "The group went down basically as a tune-up for the Atlantic 10 meet. Whether it was athletes coming off an injury, or some swimmers that we wanted to see before deciding on our scoring team for the Atlantic 10 Championships, all of them went down with a great attitude and it reflected in the racing. I thought they raced really well, and of course some performances ranking in the top two or three all-time at GW was unexpected, but definitely a good sign for the next couple of weeks. We decided to pull out for the last day of the meet so we can get them back to DC and have Sunday to regroup, rest, get ready for a strong finish to our training, and really to make sure we're ready to go in 11 days at the Atlantic 10 meet."
