Buff & Blue swimmer placed 49th in 50 free
ATLANTA - George Washington's Djurdje Matic began his run at the NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championship on Thursday morning at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center with a solid swim in the 50-yard freestyle.
The redshirt sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, posted a time of 19.79 seconds, good for 49th out of 52 in a decorated field of sprinters. It was just off his Atlantic 10 record pace of 19.56 seconds set in a gold-medal performance at the conference meet last month.
The fifth man in program history to compete at the national meet and first since Gustav Hokfelt in 2018, Matic will be back in action on Friday morning in his top event, the 100-yard butterfly.
Matic's A-10 record time of 45.52 seconds in the 100 fly had him ranked 28th in the country to earn his spot at the exclusive national meet. He'll also swim the 200 fly on Saturday.
