Buff & Blue force fifth set, succumb to top-seed Loyola Chicago
ST. LOUIS - GW volleyball's A-10 semifinal match exemplified many of the attributes that personified year one under head coach Katie Reifert. Taking on the conference's top dog in Loyola Chicago, the Buff & Blue rallied from a two-set deficit to force a winner-take-all fifth set before ultimately falling just short, 20-25, 21-25, 25-23, 26-24, 12-15.
GW made a name for itself with seven five-set victories during the campaign and was no stranger to erasing 2-0 holes to win, having done so four times already this season.Â
In the end, the Buff & Blue racked up 18 victories, the most for the program since 2015, and advanced to the conference semifinals for the first time since 2017.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Loyola jumped out to a 19-12 lead in the opening stanza, but in a sign of things to come, GW battled back to whittle the gap to two with five straight points. The Ramblers, though, steadied the ship and held on for the 25-20 victory.
LUC doubled its lead by staving off the Buff & Blue in the second. A pair of three-point runs in the middle of the frame provided enough cushion for the Ramblers.
GW looked down for the count in the third set, trailing 20-13. However, with the season on the line, GW roared back with a 6-0 run keyed by four kills from Yohannes. The Buff & Blue ultimately tied the set at 22-22 and earned the win after a Womble kill and a Loyola attack error.
GW found itself down 23-21 in the fourth frame but again pulled itself off the deck. Kills from Womble and Brittany Myers, along with a block from Womble and Porter pushed GW in front. A fifth set was destined following a pair of errors from Loyola.
The Ramblers took control of the fifth set on the serve/receive game, taking advantage of three GW service errors and adding a pair of aces on their own. GW trailed, 14-10, and fought off a couple of match points before Loyola finished the match to earn a spot in the A-10 Championship.
