Volleyball Earns Sweep of Saint Louis

GW wins its fifth-straight match to move to 11-9 overall
WASHINGTON – GW volleyball topped Saint Louis for the second-straight day to pick up its fifth-consecutive win and move to 11-9 on the season and 5-2 in Atlantic 10 play. GW and the Billikens went four sets, with GW clinching the 3-1 victory, 25-23, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23.
BY THE NUMBERS Brittany Myers led the GW offense for the second-straight match with 14 kills and a .281 hitting percentage. Liv Womble added 13 kills and made seven stops at the net. Tierra Porter went errorless this afternoon with six kills on 13 attempts to swing for .462. Porter also came up with seven blocks. Grace Allread registered 22 assists and Dilara Elmacioglu tallied 17. Bella Bowman and Salem Yohannes led the GW defense with 20 and 15 digs, respectively. HOW IT HAPPENED Saint Louis and GW were evenly matched in set one, each tallying 12 kills with seven errors on 33 attempts. The Buff & Blue got off to a 4-0 start and maintained a lead until the Billikens took control at 13-12. Four ties and three lead changes finished set one, with GW taking the lead for good at 20-19. GW quickly jumped ahead in set two, taking a 10-5 lead before a five-point scoring run from the visitors evened the set at 10. Then came 11 ties which brought the two teams to 21-21 before four straight points by GW, including three kills, lifted the Buff & Blue to a 2-0 set advantage. Saint Louis' offense came alive in set three, registering 16 kills behind a .314 hitting percentage to GW's eight to force a fourth set. Despite being out-hit in the final set, 20 kills to 12, GW tallied five aces and four blocks to contain a steady Billiken offense to finish the weekend sweep. It was GW who created a slight cushion at 4-1 to begin set four, but Saint Louis gained control and led until GW evened the set at 17. Three ties finished the match, with GW taking control at 22-21. Saint Louis avoided two match points for the Buff & Blue, but a Billiken service error cued another home court celebration. UP NEXT GW continues its four-match homestand next weekend, welcoming Fordham to the Smith Center for a 6 p.m. match on Friday before a 3 p.m. first serve on Saturday.
