Yohannes led GW offense with 16 kills
DAYTON, Ohio – GW volleyball went the distance with Dayton on Saturday, falling in five sets, 17-25, 25-21, 25-20, 17-25, 10-15.
After dropping the opening set, GW won two straight sets, needing one more to clinch the match. The Flyers played spoiler, winning the fourth and fifth frames to earn the 2-0 weekend over the Buff & Blue.
BY THE NUMBERS
Salem Yohannes led the GW offense with 16 kills and Liv Womble re-entered the lineup, tallying 12 kills and just two errors to boast a .323 hitting percentage. Tierra Porter and Brittany Myers each added eight kills.
Defensively, Addie Feek came up with six blocks and Womble added five. Bella Bowman (18), Grace Allread (12) and Dilara Elmacioglu (11) each posted double figures in digs.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Dayton controlled set one, never surrendering a lead and tallying 13 kills and three service aces to clinch the opening frame.
It was the Buff & Blue who controlled the next set, putting down 15 kills and maintaining a lead to tie the match at one set apiece.
Ten ties came in set three, with four lead changes before GW managed to pull away for good, stretching its lead to 21-16 before moving to a 2-1 set advantage.
Momentum shifted in favor of Dayton, who out-hit GW 22-16 in the final two sets. Dayton went on a 15-4 run to end the set and force a deciding fifth set.
Behind four straight points, Dayton took the early 4-1 advantage in the 15-point final frame. Four ties came after, but the Flyers clinched the match, closing with three straight points.

GW will host George Mason on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a midweek matchup before finishing its home slate vs. Davidson next weekend.
