WASHINGTON - George Washington women's basketball alumna Jonquel Jones was named the 2021 Kia Women's National Basketball Association MVP, the league announced this morning. Jones adds her first MVP to an impressive award cabinet that already includes the 2018 WNBA Sixth Player of the Year Award and the 2015 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Award.
"I can't think of a player more deserving of this year's WNBA MVP than Jonquel," said George Washington Women's Basketball Head Coach Caroline McCombs. "JJ has put in the work to develop her game at an elite level and you saw her put that on display this season. Our program is incredibly proud to have such a strong ambassador to the community and the game of basketball."
Jones received 48 of 49 first place votes and a total of 487 points from a panel of national sportswriters and broadcasters.
In her fifth WNBA season, Jones posted a career high in points per game (19.4), and averaged 11.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists. Her efforts helped lead her team, the Connecticut Sun, to a franchise-high winning percentage (.813), the best record in the WNBA (26-6), and the #1 seed throughout this year's WNBA playoffs. Last Wednesday, Jones was unanimously selected as the 2021 AP WNBA MVP.
A standout player during her three seasons at GW, Jones left in 2016 as just the third Colonial ever with 1,000 points, 800 rebounds, and 100 blocks. She capped off her GW career by being drafted sixth overall in 2016 by the Los Angeles Sparks, making her the Buff & Blue's first ever first-round selection.
