Buff & Blue honored by CSCAA after spring semester
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - GW swimming and diving continued to uphold its lofty academic standards during the spring semester, once again receiving College Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America honors.
The Buff and Blue women were recognized after posting a 3.67 cumulative GPA for the semester, while the men earned a combined mark of 3.45 to secure the accolade. It's the seventh consecutive semester, and 19th time in the past 21 semesters, that both teams landed the award honoring collegiate squads nationwide for achieving semester GPAs of 3.0 or better.
The academic honors come after a semester in which the program made a strong return to competition: The men claimed their fourth Atlantic 10 title in five seasons, led by Most Outstanding Performer Karol Mlynarczyk and nine other All-Conference performers, and the women placed fourth in the conference standings, highlighted by All-Conference honors for Erin McCarthy and Marlee Rickert.
"Our continued academic success speaks to the culture that our student-athletes have established within our program," Head Coach Brian Thomas said. "I'm particularly proud that our three best semesters in terms of team GPA have all occurred under very difficult circumstances during the COVID-19 pandemic. For the most part, we have a very resilient group, and that definitely showed itself over the past year or so."
Academically, Brendan Conley, Emils Pone, Morgan Birdy, Rachel Dickinson and Courtney Sicinski set the pace during the spring with perfect 4.0 GPAs. In total, 30 members of the program (17 women and 13 men) finished the semester with a 3.5 GPA or better, and 43 will be honored on the GW Athletics Academic Dean's List (3.00+).
