Brigham named A-10 Rookie of the Week; Whitney honored as CSM A-10 Player of the Week
WASHINGTON - First-year Ali Brigham was named the Atlantic 10's Rookie of the Week and graduate student Jasmine Whitney earned College Sports Madness' A-10 Player of the Week distinction following another sterling weekend on the floor in two wins. Both also have been named co-Colonials of the Week.
Brigham averaged 14.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.0 apg and 1.5 bpg in the two wins while shooting 60% from the floor. In Friday's win over Duquesne, Brigham poured in 13 points with five rebounds and two blocks and tied a season-high with two assists. She followed that up on Sunday with an equally impressive stat line of 15 points, four rebounds, two assists and a block.
Brigham's presence helped the Colonials to a combined 60-28 edge in points in the paint in the two matchups, and she was a part of a stalwart defensive effort that allowed 74 total points in 80 minutes of action.
The award is a long overdue first for Brigham, who is the conference's top rookie scorer at 12.2 points per game. Brigham is second overall in the league, first among freshmen, with her 52.5% field goal percentage. On a national scale, Brigham is fifth among the nation's first-years in shooting and 11th with 21 blocks.
Whitney flirted with a triple-double in both wins, averaging 9.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 7.0 apg, 2.0 spg and 1.0 bpg while playing all but 10 minutes. She knocked down a trio of 3-pointers in Friday's win over Duquesne, tallying seven rebounds and three steals. On Sunday, she dished out a season-high nine assists without a turnover, adding nine more points and seven rebounds.
Whitney was a remarkable +36 between the two games and also locked down the two leading scorers - Duquesne's Megan McConnell and St. Bonaventure's reigning A-10 Player of the Week Asianae Johnson - to a combined two points on 1-of-11 shooting.
Whitney continues to lead the league with 51 steals and 2.83 per game, ranking 12th and 24th nationally. She is also second in the loop with 4.7 assists per game (54th nationally) and third with a 2.58 assist-to-turnover ratio (32nd nationally). She is one just two players in the nation to have 50+ steals and 85+ assists this season.
