Buff & Blue trio honored after Pitt meet
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Erin McCarthy, Durde Matic and Philip Moldovanu of GW swimming and diving were honored with Atlantic 10 weekly awards on Wednesday in recognition of their excellence last weekend at Pittsburgh.
McCarthy and Matic were honored as Performer of the Week, while Moldovanu landed Rookie Performer of the Week honors.
McCarthy was also tabbed as the GWsports.com Colonial of the Week.
The reigning A-10 champion in the 1,650 free, McCarthy picked up her first career conference weekly award after posting three season-best individual swims at Pitt, highlighted by a win in the 500 free in 5:00.63.
The senior from Minnetonka, Minn., also landed runner-up in the 1,000 free (10:17.29) and third in the 200 free (1:54.52), and she contributed to a runner-up finish in the 200 free relay in a season-best time of 1:36.22 for the Buff and Blue, as well.
In his third meet as a member of the program, Matic claimed a pair of individual wins vs. the Panthers and also had a hand in a relay victory. The Belgrade, Serbia native won 100 fly in a time of 48.06 that ranks No. 5 on the program's all-time list, and he also touched first in the 50 free in a season-best time of 21.00 seconds.
In addition, Matic helped the Buff and Blue to a win in the 200 medley relay (1:30.27) and was also part of a season-best swim in the 200 free relay (1:22.67).
En route to his rookie award, Moldovanu also landed a pair of individual wins. The first-year from Boynton Beach, Fla., touched first in the 500 free (4:38.79) and 1,000 free (9:29.39) in season-best times and also put together a strong swim in his collegiate debut in the 200 free (1:48.25).
Up next, GW's divers will be in action on Nov. 18-20 at the NC State/GAC Invitational, while the swimmers return to competition the first weekend in December at the Toyota U.S. Open and Princeton Invitational.
