George Washington University Athletics

Statement from GW SAAC
6/4/2020 12:41:00 PM | General, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee
Dear Fellow Student-Athletes, Athletics Staff and GW Community,
The Student Athlete-Advisory Committee exists to empower the student-athlete voice, which is impossible to do without addressing the events surrounding the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others.
The destruction that has taken place so close to our home is a direct result of deep-seated racism, and is equally the fault of complacency and the omission of painful truths that existed long before these three recent tragedies. SAAC condemns all acts of police brutality, racism, and other acts of discrimination related to race, gender, sexuality and religion.
To our black athletes and staff, we stand with you. When members of our community are hurting, we are all hurting. As the GW chapter of SAAC, we fully support the national mission of Black Lives Matter, as well as the local missions carried out by the GW Black Men's Initiative and the Black Student Union. Attached below is a list of causes you can help, as well as mental health resources for yourself and whoever may need it.
We encourage all of GW's athletes to continue to use their platforms to share resources, petitions, and fundraisers, but also ask that support does not end with a post on social media. We must listen to those around us, fight against overt and covert racism, and be comfortable examining our own biases and shortcomings. Reach out to your community and let them know you stand with your black teammates, family and friends. The battle for equality does not stop once the protests end: we must continue to evolve and fight for our fellow athletes and family. Sawubona.
Sincerely,
GW SAAC
