Student teams will play Rocket League for cash prizes and the right to move on to the A-10 Esports Tournament
WASHINGTON - George Washington University Athletics is joining seven other Atlantic 10 Conference members in the A-10 Esports Tournament: Rocket League Presented by Capgemini. After campus qualifiers, 16 teams will compete for the A-10 Esports Championship.
"This is a great opportunity for our students to connect with one another," said Athletics Director Tanya Vogel. "In a time when most of our GW students are living at home and fall varsity sports are postponed, it's great to find a way to compete with our Atlantic 10 Conference rivals."
In the GW Tournament, teams of three will register and compete in best-of-five series beginning on October 27th, leading up to a best-of-seven finals the next day. The winning team will share a $600 first prize, and the runners up will share $300. Both finalists will move on to a 16-team A-10 Esports Champions Bracket, including teams from Davidson, Fordham, George Mason, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Saint Louis and VCU.
GW's semifinals and finals will be streamed live on Twitch, as well as the entire A-10 Champions Bracket.
Rocket League is a popular multi-platform video game, where players operating rocket-propelled vehicles work collaboratively to score soccer-style goals in a digital arena. According to Pysonix, the game's developer, 75 million people have played Rocket League.
"We are proud to present the GW and A-10 Rocket League competitions," said Capgemini Government Solutions Principal Kathleen Flynn. "As a leader in leveraging cutting-edge technological solutions for our government clients, we are thrilled to support this innovative way to connect students throughout the A-10's member schools."
Registration is now open for the tournament and will continue through October 25.
