Colonials look to continue excellence in the pool in 2019-20
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -Â In a show of the program's continued growth, George Washington swimming and diving landed atop both Atlantic 10 preseason polls on Thursday.
The men are favored to claim a fourth straight conference title after receiving 63 points, including seven of eight first-place votes, in the annual vote of the conference's coaches to edge George Mason (56) and La Salle (41).
Following a runner-up finish at the 2019 conference meet, the women tied with two-time defending champion Duquesne for the top spot at 112 points. The Colonials picked up four first-place votes to the Dukes' six. They were followed by Fordham (100), Richmond (95) and UMass (75).
This season's A-10 Championships will be held Feb. 19-22, 2020, at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
The men's squad returns eight All-Conference performers, led by 2019 A-10 Most Outstanding Performer Moritz Fath and Most Outstanding Diver Peter Nachtwey. The Colonials showcased their depth at last season's conference meet, piling up 22 medals with 14 of them gold. They've added eight first-years to the mix as they chase a fourth straight conference crown.
On the women's side, the Colonials will look to continue their rise and make the final step to claim their first team title. They have six All-Conference performers returning, including individual champions Jackie Torrez (200 fly), Andrea Moussier (1,650 free) and Meghan Burton (100 fly). They also welcome five first-years and graduate transfer Marissa Martin to the roster.
GW opens the new season on Oct. 4 at the TYR Fall Classic Presented by Omega Timing hosted by Florida International. The Colonials make their home debut at Smith Center Pool on Oct. 19 vs. Boston College.
