Colonials sweep Hartford for first win of the season
WASHINGTON - GW volleyball opened its season with a double-dip on Friday at the Smith Center and came away with a split of its first two games. After dropping the opening match to American, the Buff & Blue rebounded in emphatic fashion with a sweep of Hartford for the first win of the campaign.

Key Stats
• GW racked up an impressive 12 blocks on the day, primarily from the duo of graduate students Caroline Sklaver and Patty Valle. Sklaver topped the team with eight block assists, while Valle added seven.
• Seniors Skylar Iott and Jaimeson Lee started their final seasons with double-doubles. After tying for the team lead with 16 double-doubles each last year, Iott contributed a team-high 12 kills and 11 digs, while Lee provided 26 assists and a team-best 17 digs.
• First-year Addie Feek earned the start in her career debut and provided two kills and three assists. Valle also notched her first career start in her Buff & Blue debut.
• American held the edge in kills (62-38), assists (58-31) and service aces (12-7) while out-hitting the Colonials, .241 - .131.

• The Colonials overcame an early 7-1 deficit, roaring back to take the lead at 14-13 via a 12-7 run.
• American reasserted control with a 7-1 spurt before GW closed to within 24-23 with a pair of kills from Iott and an attack error. AU notched a kill to finish off the set.

• The Colonials picked up five blocks in the second set but were unable to get the offense in motion, hitting just .036 in the stanza.
• American finished the set on a 7-2 run to grab a two-set advantage.

• GW came out of intermission with its best set of the day, swinging .289 with four kills from sophomore Paz Dozie-Nnamah.
• The Colonials' offense found its stride with 15 kills in the set, its best performance of the afternoon.

• The momentum was not able to be sustained, though, as AU hit an impressive .469 in the fourth set to earn the victory.
• GW distributed the wealth in the frame with five different players registering kills, led by Valle's three.

• GW had a phenomenal offensive showing against the Hawks, racking up 38 kills against 12 digs while hitting .268. The Colonials had double-digit kills in all three sets and hit over .300 in the first and third frames.
• Iott (11 kills, 11 digs) recorded her second double-double in as many games, while Lee added 26 assists, four kills and four digs.
• The Colonials' grad transfer combo of Sklaver (6 kills, .417%, 7 block assists) and Valle (9 kills, .400%, 7 block assists) provided a two-way display of excellence to contribute to the triumph.

• Buoyed by a raucous crowd, the Colonials burst out to a 9-4 advantage and never relinquished the lead.
• GW had just one attack error in 23 attempts and hit .391 to open the game with authority.

• Strong sets from Valle (5 kills), Iott (4) and Dozie-Nnamah (4) allowed GW to rack up 15 kills en route to the set win.
• A back-and-forth set was finished off by a 5-2 run from the Colonials to take a 2-0 lead.

• The strong swings returned to finish out the match with 13 kills and a .345 attack percentage from GW's offense.
• Iott added four more kills on nine attempts and posted a team-best five digs in the set.
