Colonials seek third straight conference title
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - Coming off its finest season in program history, George Washington men's water polo has been selected as the 2019 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference co-favorite, along with Bucknell, in the conference preseason poll.
In addition, the Colonials - who last fall won a second straight MAWPC title before advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals - checked in at No. 15 in the CWPA preseason national poll.
Under third-year head coach Barry King, GW begins the chase for a third straight MAWPC crown with six of its top seven scorers back in the fold, paced by two-time ACWPC All-Americans Atakan Destici and Andrew Mavis.
Destici enters his senior season ranked fourth in program history in points with 419, while Mavis ranks tied for ninth all-time with 203 goals. Andras Levai is also back after tallying 139 points via 72 goals and 67 assists as a sophomore.
In all, GW's 14 returners combined for 389 of the squad's 462 goals last season. The Colonials also have a veteran in net in Matt Taylor, a graduate student who has stopped 54.7 percent of shots he's faced in his career.
The Buff and Blue kicked off preseason practice Tuesday as they prepare to open their 2019 slate on Sept. 7-8 at the Air Force Invitational.
