NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — George Washington men's basketball first-year guard Jameer Nelson Jr. claimed this week's Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week and Capgemini Colonial of the Week after he aided the Colonials over Longwood last Saturday.
Nelson Jr. finished with 16 points, seven rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block in the 13-point triumph at the Smith Center. The Pennsylvania guard shot 53.8 percent from the field and nailed 2-of-3 from the outside.
Through 12 games, Nelson Jr. is fourth on the team in scoring at 11.1 points per game and has reached double figures in each of the last five games. On the defensive end, Nelson Jr. is 10th among all first-year players nationally in steals per game (1.83) and tied for 8th in total steals (22). Among his A-10 counterparts, Nelson Jr. is sixth overall in steals per game and total steals.
Nelson Jr. shared the weekly accolade with VCU's Nah'Shon "Bones" Hyland, who scored 15 points and had seven assists in a win over Loyola Maryland.
Nelson Jr. is the second Colonial this season to claim an A-10 weekly honor. Classmate Jamison Battle was named A-10 Rookie of the Week on Nov. 25 after his superb performance at the Islands of the Bahamas Showcase.
Joe McDonald (Nov. 12) and Kevin Larsen (Feb. 25) are the last pair of Colonials to claim A-10 Rookie of the Week honors in the same year during the 2012-13 season.
The Colonials conclude 2019 at Vermont on Tuesday.
