Colonials finish season with 15 wins, most since 2015
KINGSTON, R.I. -Â GW volleyball fell victim to a red-hot La Salle squad on Friday afternoon at Keaney Gym, bowing out of the Atlantic 10 Championship in the quarterfinals (19-25, 14-25, 24-26).
The Buff & Blue were potent enough offensively on the day, hitting .244 as a team but were unable to slow down an Explorer attack that hit .364 and notched nine service aces.
Senior Skylar Iott led GW with 12 kills to finish her career with 1,133, the sixth-most in program history. Senior Jaimeson Lee capped her Colonial career with 21 assists, eight digs, four kills and a block. Lee totaled 2,738 helpers during her time in Foggy Bottom, the seventh-most in program history.
The Explorers rode the hot hand early in both the first and second sets to jump out to significant leads. La Salle scored 11 of the first 14 points in the opening stanza before playing relatively even the rest of the way to take the frame, 25-19.
The No. 5 seed broke out of the gate quickly in the second as well, leading 10-4 prior to a GW timeout. The Colonials were able to get within five in the frame before La Salle finished off the 25-14 win.
The third set saw neither team lead by more than four with a combined 15 ties and seven lead changes. GW was on the verge of forcing a fourth set, leading 21-17 before five straight points from La Salle. The Colonials rallied to go up 24-23 before the Explorers won the match with three straight points.
The Colonials complete the season with a 15-14 mark, the most wins for the program since 2015. The Buff & Blue bid adieu to three seniors and two graduate students in the program.Â
The three seniors - Iott, Lee and Jordan Young - were a part of a pair of A-10 tournament appearances and won 48 games in the Buff & Blue. Both Iott and Lee etched their names in the GW record books for assists and kills, respectively.
Caroline Sklaver and Paty Valle helped change the culture in their lone year on campus, elevating the level of play while also contributing significantly to the GW block on the court.
