Colonials put three in double figures led by Gumbs’ 13
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – GW women's basketball ran into a hot-shooting William & Mary Tribe squad on Saturday afternoon, surrendering a season-high 12 three-pointers in a 73-59 defeat inside Kaplan Arena.
GW entered the contest 19th nationally in three-point field goal percentage defense at 25.0 percent, but saw William & Mary shoot 48 percent from beyond the arc on 25 attempts. The Tribe did the majority of its damage in the second and third quarters, hitting 9-of-14 three-balls (64.2 percent) to outscore GW 50-33 in those stanzas.
Redshirt-sophomore Olivia Gumbs paced the Buff & Blue with a season-best 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting. The Lafayette transfer reached double figures for the second time this year.
Seniors Mei-Lyn Bautista and Kelsi Mahoney contributed 11 points and five rebounds a piece while first-year Maddie Loder added nine points and four boards.
An early defensive stalemate gave way to a William & Mary run over the first and second quarters headlined by the Tribe's top scorer, Bianca Boggs. A Lexus Levy three late in the first brought GW within one at 10-9, but Boggs and her teammates scored the next eight points and 22 of the next 27 to grab a 32-14 edge.
Boggs, who finished with a game-high 26 points and 10 rebounds, had 12 points in the spurt.
GW finished the first half strong with a 10-2 run thanks, in part, to triples from Loder and Bautista to head into intermission trailing by 10 at 34-24.
After the break, the Tribe hit six of their first seven shots to grow the lead back to 18. W&M extended the advantage to as many as 24 early in the fourth quarter before GW responded with an 11-1 run capped by a Mahoney three-pointer to draw within 14.
The senior hit three triples in the game and has now hit at least one triple in 32 consecutive games. The Colonials finished 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from three.
The Buff & Blue now set their sights on 2019 and the final non-conference game of the season on New Year's Day against Memphis. Tip-off from the Smith Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
