WASHINGTON - In a Sunday holiday matinee at the Charles E. Smith Center, the George Washington women's basketball team used a dominant effort on the glass to win its third straight by defeating Iona, 70-65.
Behind national player of the year candidate Jonquel Jones' ninth straight double-double (21 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 14 rebounds), GW (8-3) kept its streak intact of outrebounding every opponent this season with a 51-32 advantage on the glass. Jones also tossed in her 1,000th point as a Colonial after previously eclipsing the 1,000-point plateau for her career (including her time at Clemson) earlier this season.
Junior Hannah Schaible was also key in the Colonials' effort with 16 points and nine rebounds, scoring 14 in the first half as GW built an 11-point halftime lead. Schaible was a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line, as GW made more free throws than Iona attempted - the Colonials got to the line 37 times and converted 25 foul shots, compared to the Gaels' 14-of-23 afternoon at the stripe.
Grad student Lauren Chase was the third Colonial in double figures with 10 points, and she also dished out a game-high six assists.
A back-and-forth opening quarter included two ties and five lead changes, but GW outscored Iona, 23-10, in the second period to take a 38-27 lead at the break. The Colonials led by as many as 15 points early in the third quarter, as a layup by Jones made it 44-29 at the 7:34 mark.
Iona (5-7) used an 11-2 run to cut it to six, 46-40, but a three-point play by Jones just before the buzzer regained a 10-point advantage, 52-42.
The Gaels opened the fourth quarter with a 15-4 surge to take a 57-56 lead midway through the period, but Chase responded with a layup and-one, igniting a 9-0 GW run which put the Colonials on top for good. Iona made it a three-point game with 1:36 remaining, but Chase and Schaible combined to make 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Philecia Gilmore led Iona with 19 points on 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, while Joy Adams and Aaliyah Robinson added 13 points apiece.
Following a break for the holidays, GW returns to the court on Monday, Dec. 28, at Illinois.
