RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Jonquel Jones posted her eighth double-double of the season with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the George Washington women's basketball team to a 72-58 win over Atlantic 10 rival Richmond on Saturday afternoon at the Robins Center.
GW improves to 19-8 overall and 10-4 in A-10 play with its third straight win and maintains a tie for second place in the league standings with two games to go in the regular season. The top four teams at the end of the season earn a bye through to the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship, which takes place from March 5-9 at the Richmond Coliseum.
Jones scored her career-high 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting, and she added three assists and two blocks. Grad student Danni Jackson tallied 16 points and six assists, and freshman Caira Washington chipped in 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Richmond's Genevieve Okoro made the first bucket of the game, but Washington tied it on the Colonials' next possession, and a three-point play by Jones 36 seconds later gave GW a lead it would not relinquish.
Though the Colonials scored nine straight points, the Spiders (12-15, 6-8 A-10) kept it close for much of the first half until a jumper by sophomore Alexis Chandler at the 9:26 mark sparked a 19-2 run to give GW control of the game. The Colonials led, 40-24, at the break behind Jones' 15 points and eight rebounds.
GW scored the first eight points of the second half to open a game-high 24 point lead, 48-24, with 16:41 remaining. Richmond chipped away with six three-pointers in the period but never got closer than the 14-point final margin.
Kristina King led the Spiders with 20 points on four three-pointers, while Janelle Hubbard made two treys and finished with 14 points.
GW shot 49.3 percent in the game and outrebounded Richmond, 51-31. The Spiders, who shot 35.9 percent from the floor, took 34 three-point attempts among their 64 shots.
The Colonials return to action on Wednesday when they hit the road for the final time this season to face A-10 rival St. Bonaventure at 7 p.m.
