Colonials Dive Into Season With A Split Against JMU

Washington, DC -- The Colonials put in a strong performance against James Madison in their first home swimming and diving meet of the season. The women won with a final score of 125-112. The GW men were tied at the break and had a chance to win going into the final relay but lost 135-107. GW's divers took first place in both the men's and women's events, to help lead the Colonials to a strong start to the 2003-2004 season.
The men's divers took first, second and fourth place in the one and three meter dives. Seniors Robert Stuart (Greenville, DE/Alexis I. DuPont) and James Galihar (Richardson, TX/Bishop Lynch) each finished first and second on the day. On the women's side, Junior Jessica Jaross (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) took first in both diving events while teammate Alicia Moulton (North Andover, MA/North Andover) took second twice.
In swimming, sophomore Maggie Moss (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) was victorious in both the 200-yd IM and the 200-yd backstroke with times of 2:09.45 and 2:05.87 respectively. She also teamed up with Monica Pampell (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque), Kirstin Rasmuson (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel) and Christina Boland (Purcelville, VA/Loudon Valley) to win the 400 Medley Relay, the first event of meet. Rasmuson also won first in 200-yd breaststroke with a time of 2:25.59.
Kristen Fagley (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/Westminster) also took home two first-place finishes, winning the 500-yd freestyle in a time of 5:06.95 and the 200-yd freestyle with a time of 1:55.50. Senior captain Crystal Freeman (Ft. Dix, NJ/Holy Cross) had a fantastic finish in the 1,000-yd freestyle with a time of 10:33.54, almost 15 seconds faster than second place.
On the men's side, four different swimmers took first place in a strong showing. Bryan Feretti (Newtown, PA/Council Rock) finished the 1,000-yd freestyle in a time of 9:58.74, Sean Flaherty (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) took first in the 200-yd freestyle in 1:45.64, Andrew De Sorbo (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury) flew in the 200-yd butterfly with a time of 1:59.09, and Jonathan Sabin (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield) won the 200-yd backstroke in 1:55.56.
