Swimming Gets Off to Fast Start at Potomac Relays

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's swimming team amassed 114 points to easily outscore the seven-team field Friday in the 2003 Potomac Relay Invitational at Georgetown's McCarthy pool. The women's score doubled second-place George Mason (57). The GW men, a squad relying heavily on freshmen this season, also swam well and placed second in the six-team field with 68 points. American University won the men's event with 122 points.
Sophomore Maggie Moss paced the Colonials with a pool record time off :57.87 in the leadoff leg of the women's 3x100 backstroke relay. Moss, along with senior Ruth Dubyel and freshman Monica Pampell, won the event in the time of 2:58.87, nearly six seconds ahead of second place George Mason.
Moss was then a part of a pool record-setting team when she, Kirsten Rasmuson, Dubyel and Pampell won the 200 medley relay. Dubyel also had a split time of :57.81 in her leg of the 3 x 100 Butterfly Relay. The GW women's team won all but two of the events at the 2003 Potomac Relay Invitational.
On the men's side, the team of freshmen Daniel Mahoney, Sean Flaherty, Jeffrey Cohn and junior Bryan Ferretti placed second in the 800-yard freestyle relay behind American. Andrew De Sorbo also recorded a strong performance with a split time of :51.96 in his leg of the 3 x 100 butterfly relay.
GW hosts James Madison next Saturday, Oct. 25 in a 1:00 p.m. meet at Smith Center. The diving competition begins at 11:00 a.m.
