CAMDEN, NJ - The GW Women's Rowing team concluded their 2002 Spring Racing season May 12 at the Eastern Sprints Championships in Camden, NJ. The Eastern Sprints league is the oldest and most competitive league in the country for women's rowing. Five of the top 10 crews in the country including #2 Brown, #4 Princeton, #6 Yale, #8 Harvard, and #10 Syracuse are members of the Sprints league, with a total of 12 of the 18 Sprints schools ranked in the nation's Top 25 by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association.
The GW women raced in the preliminary heats in the morning, and finals in the afternoon. Weather forecasts of high winds, rain and thunderstorms never materialized. Instead, the rowers found themselves racing on flat water with only a firm cross headwind making the times slower than normal.
"The results for the crews were good, although everyone came in expecting better," GW head coach Steve Peterson said. "The inconsistency which has plagued the team all year long, was evident in the day's racing. Crews which we had beaten earlier in the year, came back to beat us here. Then there were times when we were really racing at the same level as some of the top crews. However, in a league like this, you really have to perform at your best all the time, not just some of the time. I think the team learned that."
A total of 18 teams came to compete at the regatta, with the final results for each of the crews as follows:
GW Women's Rowing results:
Varsity Eight: 15th
2nd Varsity Eight: 15th
Novice Eight: 16th
2nd Novice Eight: 15th

"We are a very young team," Peterson added. "The two seniors who are graduating, Sarah Hall (Meridan, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall) and Anastasia Roussos (Princeton, NJ/Princeton), will be missed. They were leaders for the team, and really gave us everything they had through their four years of racing. However, with as many people returning as we do, the lessons learned this weekend and this past whole year, will definitely make for a very strong crew next year."
