COLLINGSWOOD, NJ - The GW Women's Rowing team competed in the Verizon Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing Championships Saturday, April 27, on the Cooper River in Collingswood, NJ. The GW men also competed in the A-10 Invitational following the women's championships. The University of Massachusetts won its seventh league title in as many years. George Washington, which had finished second each of the last six years, was third with 23 points.
George Washington was first in the Novice 8-B with a time of 8:12.25. For the fourth year in a row, no meet records were eclipsed. In voting conducted among the Conference's head coaches, Dayton's Mike Miles was honored as the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. The conditions were great for racing, as the water was flat, temperatures werer in the upper 60's and it was slightly overcast, making it ideal for the racers.
"The results for the women were not what we expected," GW coach Steve Peterson said. "We came into the racing picked as a favorite and it didn't finish that way. Even though the overall third place result is good and many teams might be satisfied with that, we expected much better. This is the first time the women have ever finished lower than second at the Atlantic 10 Rowing Championship."
"I was very pleased with the performances of the 2nd Novice and 1st Novice Eights which got first and second places, respectively. They rowed solid races and really kept us in the hunt for the team trophy. It is hard to pinpoint what went wrong with the other crews, but how they react to this result will determine what type of athletes they really are. It is easy to keep motivated and work hard when you win. It is when you don't achieve the results that you expected that shows your true character. As I mentioned to them after the racing, we still have two weeks in our regular season, and a lot can be done between now and the Eastern Sprints (the final regular season championship)."
"As for the men's Atlantic 10 Invitational, the GW guys did fantastic. The Varsity Eight rowed a solid race, and kept their bow just ahead of UMass the whole way down the course. For the freshmen, they made things look easy, but that's the way they have been doing things all year. The freshmen have been having a terrific season and I for one, can't wait to see how they do at nationals."
