WASHINGTON, DC - The GW Women's Rowing team hosted their first home regatta of the season on the Potomac River Saturday. By virtue of their win in the varsity eight race, Boston University (ranked 15th in nation) took home the Playfair Cup for the third straight year.
The regatta involved two sessions of racing. The first matched the Colonials against 15th-ranked Terriers of BU and the U.S. Naval Academy for the Virginia Playfair Cup. The GW women raced MIT in the afternoon.
Conditions were challenging as the gusting winds from all directions made the water choppy.

"The results from this weekend were mixed," GW coach Steve Peterson said. "I think considering the conditions, the crews all rowed well. But the expectations and goals for each of the crews was to row a completely solid race, both physically and mentally. We knew going into the racing if we did that, we have the talent to win. However, having a couple of mistakes in each of the races, it is hard to feel totally satisfied with the results. We knew coming into the racing that the varsity from BU and the novice from Navy would both be very fast and hard to beat. Each small mistake can cost you big. But we also felt that if we didn't beat them, I think we expected to be a little closer to them. In the afternoon racing, we approached the races a little differently and the results reflected the changes we made."
The GW women travel to Lorton, VA, Sunday to race in the Occoquan Sprints regatta. The Colonials will race twice on Sunday and face crews from Virginia and George Mason among other mid-Atlantic region universities. Racing that begins at 11:00 a.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m.
Saturday, April 13 is the 15th Annual GW Invitational Crew Classic. The Crew Classic has become the largest collegiate rowing regatta in the DC area and involves crews from Virginia, Temple, Columbia, Tennessee, Navy and Georgetown, among others. Racing begins at 9:00 a.m. and concludes at approximately 4:00 p.m. at Washington Harbor.
