WASHINGTON, DC (August 1, 2001) -- Samantha Byrd has been named to the George Washington University coaching staff for women's rowing, head coach Steve Peterson has announced. Byrd replaces Angela Hart who resigned to pursue other interests.
A 1999 graduate of GW, Byrd will be responsible for coaching the women's novice. She spent the past year as a graduate assistant coach for the GW second varsity eight and third varsity four while pursuing a master's degree in Human Resource development. She is the recipient of a Presidential Administrative Fellow scholarship (1999-2001).
Prior to that, Byrd was a four-year letterwinner for the Colonials women's crew and captained the varsity eight as a senior. She was a member of GW's NCAA Women's Rowing championship entry in 1998--the only GW crew to qualify for the NCAAs--as the Colonials varsity eight finished the season ranked 15th nationally.
She was a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division I first team All-America selection in 1999 as well as a first team All-Mid-Atlantic selection.
The Arkansas native also is a rowing instructor with Potomac Sculling Incorporated.
GW Rowing is headquartered at Thompson Boat Center on the Potomac River. The GW women's rowing team competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
