WASHINGTON, DC (July 23, 2001) -- Two former members of the GW rowing program and Colonials' head coach Steve Peterson will take part in the World Championships this summer in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Jen Edwards ('97), a former GW novice women's coach, will be sitting in the three seat of the U.S. Lightweight Women's Quadruple Sculls.
Aquil Abdullah ('96) will be sitting in bow seat of the U.S. Men's Heavyweight Quadruple Sculls.
Sixth-year head coach Steve Peterson has been named as coach of the U.S. Lightweight Women's Quadruple Sculls. Peterson was a '96 Olympian and is a two-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year.
This marks the first trip to the World Championships for both Abdullah and Edwards although Abdullah was part of the U.S. Team that raced at the Pan American Games in 1999 where he won a silver medal in the Heavyweight Single Sculls in Canada.
This is Peterson's third time on the National team as a coach. He coached the Lightweight Women's Pair to a silver medal at last year's World Championships and the full Lightweight Women's Squad to two silvers and one bronze medal at the 1999 Pan Am Games.
The U.S. team Trials took place July 21-22 in Princeton, NJ, on Lake Carnegie. Abdullah did not race at the trials, because his crew (formed from athletes training at the U.S. National Team Training Center in Princeton) was unchallenged and was, therefore, automatically named to represent the U.S. in that event.
The U.S. team will leave for Lucerne on August 12. The competition takes place from August 20-26.
