WASHINGTON, DC (May 25) -- Senior Maria Bogen (Maple Grove, MN/Osseo Senior) and sophomore Molly Hueller (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater Area) have been honored by the College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) for their academic and athletic achievements in the sport of women's rowing. Bogen was named a National Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2001 while both Bogen and Hueller were named to Mid-Atlantic All-Region teams.
The 2001 CRCA National Scholar-Athlete Award is given to rowers in all NCAA divisions based on the following criteria: the student-athlete must meet all eligibility rules as defined by the institution and be a sophomore, junior, or senior who has rowed in her varsity boat for a minimum of 75 percent of the current season's races prior to May 17.
Bogen is an International Affairs major who maintained a 3.66 GPA. She rows in the third seat for the GW women's varsity eight.
Hueller was named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Region First Team by the CRCA while Bogen was named to the second team. Athletes for this award are chosen based on the following criteria: varsity eight record, strength of schedule, nomination rank (the rank order of nominees as chosen by the nominating coach), coach's comments and 2K ergometer score.
Hueller was named the 2001 MVP for GW Women's Crew and rows in the stroke position.
The George Washington University women's crews placed second at the 2001 Verizon Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing Championships April 28 on the Cooper River in Collingswood, NJ.
For the second straight year, GW head coach Steve Peterson, now in his fifth year at GW, was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in a vote of the Conference's head coaches.
