Women's Rowing Overpowered At Playfair Cup
4/9/2001 12:00:00 AM | Crew
Host Boston University was the favorite to sweep the regatta, but highly ranked Iowa made things interesting. The Playfair Cup is given to the winner of the Boston University, Navy and GW varsity women's eight race. Since Iowa was a guest for this year, they were not "eligible" for the trophy if they won, which they did, in an upset.
"I think the women raced well," said GW coach Steve Peterson. "As they have been doing all year, are racing technically well. We are just getting overpowered. That was definitely the case with Boston University. I was disappointed with the loss to Navy in the varsity eight. We have developed a good rivalry with them, and it really came down to the last 20 strokes of the race...and they just outsprinted us. I thought we would be able to push through them for the win, but that is why we race."
