LOWELL, MA (Apr. 7) - The GW men's varsity crew opened their season in fine fashion on April 7 with a convincing victory over crews from UMass, Colby, WPI and Wesleyan on the Merrimack River in Lowell, MA.
The Colonials won the 2000-meter race in a time of 6:09.9 and was more than two boat lengths ahead of their nearest rivals at the finish. Rowing in their new shell called "The Wedge," the Colonials were beaten slightly off the start but quickly moved through the field to win the four-boat final.
"Wesleyan College appeared to get an early advantage off the start," said second year varsity coach Gene Kininmonth. "However, our crew held their composure and settled into a nice racing rythmn and with their smooth, efficient technique they were soon the clear leaders for the remainder of the race."
The race venue was changed to the Merrimack River at Lowell from the original venue at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester because the lake was still frozen. GW's freshman crew and the second varsity crews also won their battles against their northeastern rivalsl.
"This is really a wonderful way to open our season" said Kininmonth. "Our varsity crew were in dominant form today and it was pleasing to see the depth of the program showing through with the freshmen and second varsity crews each having strong victories as well."
