LORTON, VA (Apr. 8) - The GW men's varsity crew ran its winning streak to 11-0 this weekend with a key victory at the Occoquan Sprints Regatta on the Occoquan Reservoir near Lorton, VA, on April 8.
Rowing in their new boat called "The Wedge" the Colonials quickly overpowered their opposition in their quest for revenge after losing this same race last year.
In the heats GW easily disposed of Drexel, Johns Hopkins and William & Mary to qualify for the final where the crew won by over three boat lengths. George Washington then went on to easily win the final in a time of 6:04 minutes, well ahead of Duke (6:13.3) and Drexel (6:13.7).
Nine universities participated in the regatta although only six qualified for the afternoon final.
"This was our first weekend of racing and we wanted to set a strong tone for the rest of the season," said team captain Brendan Gilbert. "I think we succeeded in doing just that."
The GW men's crew is now undefeated so far this season and off to one of its best starts in recent years. And their new racing shell "The Wedge" has yet to lose a race since it was first launched on March 15th.
Next up is the GW Invitational Crew Classic Saturday, April 14, where the Colonials face off against cross-town rival Georgetown as well as nationally ranked Virginia, Temple, Navy and Trinity College.
