Swimming Has A Big Second Day At Atlantic 10 Championships

WASHINGTON, D.C.. (February 16, 2001) - Senior Alvaro Fortuny (Guatemala City, Guatemala/ Colegio Interamericano) broke the Atlantic 10 record in the 100-yd breaststroke twice and freshman Ruth Dubyel (West Point, NY/ James I. O'Neill) won the 100-yd backstroke (:58.41) and broke the school record in winning the 100-yd butterfly (:56.97) to help the men's and women's swimming and diving teams to a third and second overall standing after two days of the Atlantic 10 Championships in Buffalo, NY.
Fortuny broke the Atlantic 10 record of :55.73 when he swam a :55.34 this morning in the preliminary heats. Fortuny returned to the pool this evening and broke his newly set record by swimming a :54.65 to win the Atlantic 10 Championship in the 100-yd breaststroke. His time was also a pool record and an NCAA qualifying time.
Dubyel became the second GW freshman swimmer to win two events. Her teammate Kristen Fagley (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/ Westminster Academy) captured the 200-yd freestyle in 1:53.46 earlier in the evening. Fagley also won the 500-yd freestyle on the first day of competition.
Other highlights from day two included junior Nell Friar (Oak Ridge, TN/ Oak Ridge) repeating as Atlantic 10 champion in the 100-yd breaststroke by winning the event in 1:04.94 and setting a new school record in the process. Senior Wes Teter (Farmer's Branch, TX/ RL Turner) also set a new school record in winning the 200-yd freestyle in 1:39.12. Teter also finished second in the 100-yd backstroke with a :51.14. Also, the team of junior Jocelyn Finch (Olympia, WA/ Olympia), freshman Crystal Freeman (Ft. Dix, NJ/ Holy Cross), junior Laura Najjar (Sarasota, FL/ Bradenton Christian) and Fagley won the 800-yd freestyle relay in 7:43.53.
The women's team has a total of 483.50 points and trails first place Massachusetts by 20.5 points. The men sit comfortably in third place with 315 points behind only UMass and St. Bonaventure. The teams return to the pool tomorrow for the final day of competition.
