Fagley and Finch Crowned Atlantic 10 Swimming Champions

WASHINGTON, DC (February 16, 2001) - Freshman Kristen Fagley (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/ Westminster Academy) won the 500-yd freestyle (4:59.90) and junior Jocelyn Finch (Olympia, WA/Olympia) set a new school record (2:06.50) in winning the 200-yd individual medley to help lead the women’s swimming team on the first day of the Atlantic 10 Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. The women’s team is in second place overall with a score of 205.5, less than five points behind first place Massachusetts.
Also on the women’s side, freshman Crystal Freeman (Ft. Dix, NJ/Holy Cross H.S.) finished right behind Fagley in the 500-yd freestyle with a 5:01.36. Junior Nell Friar (Oak Ridge, TN/ Oak Ridge) finished third in the 200-yd individual medley with a 2:10.54 and combined with Ruth Dubyel (West Point, NY/ James I. O’Neill), Shannon Lynch (Medford, NJ/ Lenape) and Ashley Orchard (Tamarac, FL/ Pine Crest) to finish second in the 400-yd medley relay with a 3:54.93.
On the men’s side, the team of Wes Teter (Farmer’s Branch, TX/ RL Turner), Alvaro Fortuny (Guatemala City, Guatemala/ Colegio Interamericano), Andrew De Sorbo (Salisbury, NC/ Salisbury) and Ryan White (Silver Spring, MD/John F. Kennedy) captured the 400-yd medley relay with a 3:21.32 to help lead the team to fourth place overall after the first day. Fortuny swam the breaststroke leg of the race in :53.96. The fastest time in the 100-yd breaststroke in the country this season was by Brendan Hansen of the University of Texas, he swam a :54:12. Fortuny will get his chance to repeat his performance in the 100-yd breaststroke later on this weekend.
