PRINCETON, NJ (Nov. 12, 2001) - The GW men's and women's rowing teams were in Princeton Nov. 11 to race at the "Belly of the Carnegie." The "Belly of the Carnegie" is a 2 3/4-mile race held on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, NJ. The "Belly" is a novice crew only regatta. A novice is a rower who is in their first year of collegiate rowing.
This is the last "head race" the GW crew will take part in for the fall season. Head races are usually several miles long, and the crews are started at 15 second intervals and race against the clock. The final placings are determined by who covers the course in the shortest amount of time.
Conditions for the racing were warm but windy, providing challenging waters to row in.
GW sent five, two men's and three women's, crews to Princeton to race. They would be competing against many of the other members of the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (Eastern Sprints) League, which include Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Columbia and Pennsylvania to name a few.
"I think the final results don't really indicate the true progress we made this fall," GW coach Steve Peterson said. For both the men's and women's crews, there have been a lot of distractions and disruptions to practice this fall. So we haven't had as much practice time as we normally would have. Add to that the fact that on the women's side, we only have two novices with high school rowing experience. If you look at all these things together, the results aren't really all that bad. These (the Eastern Sprints) schools have some of the fastest and most experienced novice crews in the country. To be competing at the same level as them with everything we have had to deal with this fall, I think, is a victory itself."
Final results for the two events:
Men's Heavyweight Eight (24 crews entered)
1. Harvard A 13:59.1
2. Navy A 14:04.3
3. Princeton A 14:08.2
18. GW B 15:20.7
21. GW A 16:08.0
Women's Heavyweight Eight (33 crews entered)
1. Princeton B 16:16.1
2. Princeton A 16:35.9
3. Radcliffe (Harvard) 16:36.1
20. GW C 17:45.7
