Also competing in the race were crews from the Potomac Boat Club (PBC). PBC has long been a training center for elite rowing athletes and continues to produce top level athletes. On Saturday, there were a number of current national team and elite PBC athletes racing on the Potomac, including GW alumnus Aquil Abdullah '96, who recently finished second at the US Olympic Team Trials in the Men's Open Single. Abdullah also won the prestigious Diamond Sculls Event at the English Henley later this summer.
Women's Varsity 8 Final Results
1 - PBC 15:42.1
2 - GW 15:53.8
3 - Navy 15:56.5
4 - Georgetown 16:37.2
5 - Georgetown 16:37.5
"Although I wish we had won the event, I am extremely happy with how our women rowed," GW coach Steve Peterson said. "I know many of the women in the PBC crew, and they are very experienced and train together year-round. We avenged our loss from last year to Navy, which I am extremely happy about. However, a three-second victory over three miles is very close and I am sure Navy will be looking to take us down in a few weeks at the Head of the Charles."
"Technically, we haven't had a lot of time on the water (official practices only started about two weeks ago), so the fact that they raced well, and more importantly, rowed well, made me happy. It is very early in the year and the goal right now is to build a solid foundation of technique and conditioning for the spring."
Last year, Navy defeated GW at the Head of the Potomac, while the Colonials defeated Georgetown.
The next competition for the GW mens and womens crews is Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 21-22, at the Head of the Charles in Boston, MA.
