Women's Water Polo Places Eight on All-Academic Team

The team was divided into three levels of achievement based on grade-point average: Excellent 3.20-3.40; Superior 3.41-3.70, and Outstanding 3.71-4.0. GW's combined team GPA of 3.17 also was recognized among teams above whose cumulative GPA was 2.75 or higher.
GW had five athletes named to the Superior team: freshman Jessica Hess (Honolulu, HI/Moanalua) with a 3.60 GPA in Latin American studies; junior Heather Walenga (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) with a 3.55 GPA in exercise science; freshman Kiersten Johnson (Costa Mesa, CA/Newport Harbor) with a 3.54 GPA in arts and sciences; freshman Juli Marhefka (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) with a 3.50 GPA in arts and sciences, and freshman Deanna Fuller (Erie, PA/McDowell) with a 3.45 GPA as an arts and sciences major.
Three more Colonials were named to the team in the Excellent category: sophomore Nell Friar (Oak Ridge, TN/Oak Ridge) with a 3.39 GPA in exercise science; senior Carolyn Nelson (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) with a 3.38 GPA in electronic media, and sophomore Elizabeth Kuhl (St. Louis, MO/Mary Institute) who maintained a 3.20 GPA with a double major in psychology and biology.
The Colonials' leading scorer, Walenga, was named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Conference first team by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) earlier this year.
GW (11-13) qualified for the Eastern Championships April 29-30 at Princeton, NJ. The 2000 campaign was the inaugural season for women's water polo as a varsity sport at GW.
