Next up for the GW men's crew (18-5) is "The Duel" against Georgetown to
be held on the Potomac River on Sunday, May 7th.
The races will be a "best-of-seven" match similar to America's Cup race
format. The crews will race from Key Bridge to Washington Harbour, a
distance of a little over a half-mile.
George Washington's "Reserve Eight" and "Freshman Eight" crews will race
Georgetown over the same distance in a best-of-five series.
"I imagine there will be a lot of pride on the line in a cross-town
confrontation such as this," said first-year GW men's varsity coach Gene
Kininmonth. "The national coaching polls have ranked Georgetown right
with us all year. The time for the showdown has definitely arrived."
Kininmonth believes a fast start out of the blocks will be critical if
his squad is to be successful this weekend. "We will probably practice
just our starting sequence alone about two hundred times this week" he
said. "Georgetown has a huge crew. Our strategy will be to look to
unbalance them
early and just try to hang on. If we do that, we can be successful.
Either way, it is undoubtedly going to be close."
Races are scheduled to start at 8:00am. on Sunday.
